Fans want Shay Given to captain Ireland

February 16th, 2007

After the fiasco of San Marino Donegal fans who were there are
calling not only for the heads of manager Steve Staunton and FAI boss
John Delaney.

They also want Robbie Keane stripped of the captaincy. They want
it given, instead, to Donegal ‘keeper Shay Given.

Ballyshannon man Phil McLoone who was at the game when Ireland
struggled to beat one of the world’s lowest-ranked teams by a goal
scored eight seconds from the end of injury time.

Phil told Ocean FM radio: “It must have been one of the worst
sporting nights of my life. It was worse than embarrassing.”

He added: “Staunton has to go. John Delaney, who put him in the
job has to go.

“And as for Robbie Keane as captain, that’s a joke.

“There’s only one person fit for that job in the squad – the
Donegal man – but they probably won’t take it from Keane at this stage
for fear of further demoralising the team.”

Shay Given’s father Seamus also hit out at the squad management
– and made national headlines with his outburst.

Seamus, who was also at the game, referred to Staunton by his
nickname “Stan” and accused him of speaking nonsense when he claimed
the team showed character.

“He was talking s…e”, Mr Given senior was reported as saying in
the Irish Daily Star.
