Fire station decision expected soon

April 21st, 2008

A decision is expected shortly on whether Bundoran and Ballyshannon are to get a new combined fire station - near Finner Camp - or whether each town will get its own separate new fire station.
The situation is particularly sensitive in Bundoran, where many still vividly recall a terrible fire at the old Central Hotel which claimed the lives of 10 people, including a number of children, in 1980.
The argument, as in Ballyshannon, is that a fire station as close as possible to the largest part of the population, is the most pragmatic approach.
Earlier this month, a delegation from Donegal met with senior Department of the Environment officials to discuss the matter further.
Some local politicians have expressed concern that one single fire station may not be as good as having two separate ones and that this could lead to longer times when answering emergency calls.
Speaking at a reconvened meeting of Donegal Co. Council on Monday, Co. Manager, Michael McLoone said that a full cost benefit analysis had been carried out by consultants regarding the two options. Two reports were prepared and submitted to the Department.
Mr. McLoone expects that an announcement will be made shortly but he has not been given any indication as to whether the funding will be for a new combined station or for two separate ones.
Cllr. Sean McEniff said that it should not be down to a question of cost but what is in the best interest of the people of the area.
The delegation that met Department officials comprised: the Co. Manager, Mr. McLoone; Tony Boland, Principal Officer; Celina Barrett, Asst. Fire Advisor Technical Advisor; Brendan Mahon, Asst. Capital Services; Robert McMenamin, Asst. Chief Fire Officer; John Gavigan, Station Officer, Ballyshannon; and Michael Goodwin, Station Officer, Bundoran.
