Donegal GAA manager debacle
Statement from managerial applicants Declan Bonner and Charlie Mulgrew issued on Thursday afternoon, October 23rd 2008
We, Declan Bonner and Charlie Mulgrew, wish to express our utter dissatisfaction at the farcical manner in which the Donegal GAA County Executive have conducted the appointment of the Senior Management position.
As applicants we recognised and complied with the selection procedure, and were fully prepared to accept whatever decision was arrived at so long as a fair process was applied. We feel that the County Executive should now be transparent and reveal exactly the outcome of that process.
However the events of the County Committee meeting last night, Wed. 22nd, (at which we were not present because w e are not members of that Committee), have resulted in a complete departure from the procedure in which we engaged.
Another of the applicants was afforded an opportunity to address the Club delegates directly. During the course of his address remarks were made about our involvement in the application process which are totally untrue. Such an advantage to address the clubs directly was not conferred upon ourselves nor indeed the other worthy applicants.
As a consequence, once again the important business of Donegal football has been dragged through the mud. No lesson has been learned from the debacle which resulted in Brian McIver being deposed.
In order that the best interests of Donegal football maybe taken into account, it is now necessary that the entire selection procedure, which is now fatally flawed, is set aside and a new independent procedure implemented. The County Executive have mishandled the selection procedure to such an extent that their continuation in office is untenable.
