Glengesh pass heralded by top travel bible!

Officially the largest travel guide book and digital media publisher in the world; Lonely Planet has given the Glengesh pass a huge thumbs-up.

The notoriously hard-hitting publication described the scenic route “as a generous slice of alpine magic in the wilds of Donegal.”

The unspoilt spectacular view from the pinnacle is ranked sixth in a nationwide poll and has given the region welcome exposure as it looks to get back to basics in 2010.

Stephen McCahill, of the Ardara Tourist Office, admits that the recent drive within the industry to return to ‘what we do best’ will ultimately see us once again reap the benefits, particularly in Ardara.

“This is great coverage as it’s the most referenced travel publication in the world,” said Steven.

“We are a niche market in this region. And over the years, having worked in the industry as a young schoolboy, I was always amazed with the different kind of clientele that Ardara attracts.

“It’s people who appreciate beauty, scenery, fun, good food and general social enjoyment. We’ve never been advocates of late nightclubs and discos in the town, and that has carried through since the seventies.

“But Ardara’s quality goes all the way back to its roots as a market town in the early days, where its very survival depended on its warmth and friendliness, and a conviction to sell its produce- we haven’t lost that.”

A comprehensive guide to eating, drinking and accommodation is also included and goes way off the beaten track, throwing up some absolute gems. It positively refers to the area as the ‘wild child’ of Ireland and advises visitors to embrace the outdoors.

“We have been guilty in the past of not appreciating what exactly we have to offer,” Steven continues. “Being the most northern part of southern Ireland, we really need to market ourselves better, but at the same time avoiding becoming too commercialised.

“To book a holiday home catering for up to three families; down the country can cost you up to three times the amount we’re quoting here. When you split up the rent, the cooking and take into consideration the natural amenities in the locality- we are in a great position to attract visitors.
