PFA continue to lead the way

February 3rd, 2010

The Ardara Poor Farmers’ Association (APFA) handed over their most recent charity efforts on Thursday night last, as their admirable work continues to make a huge contribution to its favoured causes.

This year’s comedy auction, which again included livestock of various description, raised €18,000 on the night, and was split into two cheques- and they were presented to Brid McGill of the Donegal Hospice, and Maura Garvey of the Irish Cancer Society.

The annual December event, which has even drawn the attention of the national media, sees Teague’s Bar transformed into a farmer’s den for the evening. And amidst the chicken poop and donkey neighs- locals dig deep and show their appreciation for the work being done by both the hospice and cancer carers.

Following the presentations, both Marie and Bridget spoke of their extreme gratitude for the continued support of the group, particularly in these trying times.

“Once again this is a fantastic amount of money for just one night’s efforts,” said Marie. “It sounds like it was another mad night of fun, and we just hope that we are invited to attend next year!”

This year’s farmyard mayhem brings the total amount raised to over €111,000 since the event’s inception four years ago- meaning that in just four evenings local generosity has contributed well over 100K from its own pocket.

Kathy Boyd, one of the main driving forces behind those efforts, insisted that people deserve extra credit this year, considering the current ‘economic strangle’ firmly fitted around the nation’s neck.

“We had another unbelievable response, and to think that we’ve now surpassed €100,000 in just four years is remarkable. Everyone knows the Trojan work that both causes put in on a daily basis, and we just want to continue to show our gratitude.”

The draw winners on the night were Paddy Boyle, Liskeraghan (LCD TV), and Roisin McHugh, Leaconnell (Hi-Fi system).
