More unwanted headlines and not a football in sight
By Frank Craig, sports editor
With Donegal GAA washing their dirty linen in public once more this week, we have to ask ourselves when will we ever learn?
Regardless of the contents of Brian McEniff’s piece published in last Friday’s Gaelic Life, we need to take on a collective responsibility to keep ourselves on the back pages for all the right reasons.
We’ve never had any problem with hanging out the players any time they’ve stepped out of line. But as they continue to keep their noses clean others haven’t been able to follow suit.
One thing that is for certain is that two of the county’s biggest footballing personalities shouldn’t be at loggerheads. But one wonders if that can really be avoided following McEniff’s reported comments about Martin McHugh last week.
McHugh to his credit hasn’t fanned the flames. But as a regular contributor to the Star newspaper- the issue will surely be addressed sooner rather than later. His column in yesterday’s edition touched on many topics, but not a word on McEniff’s controversial comments.
We also continue to make the wrong kind of headlines in the boardroom as two gripes now go outside our own official perimeters for deliberation.
Appeals in relation to the number of sides in this year’s senior club championship will be heard by the Ulster Council as well as the contentious issue of boundaries within the county.
With clubs already vexed from the way they were treated last year, they now have to wait to see where their championship season starts following the postponement of last Saturday’s club championship draw.
And what an easy stone that will be to throw midsummer if their season faces any unnecessary disruption either then or right at the beginning.
