Scoil Náisiúnta an Caisil show their support for Haiti
The pupils at Scoil Náisiúnta an Caisil in Glencolmcille have raised a fantastic €1500 to go towards relieving the devastation suffered recently in Haiti.
Following that great effort the Donegal Post paid a visit to the school last Thursday, as they presented a cheque to Killybegs businessman Michael Herity. Michael’s sister Gena is an aid worker in Haiti and survived the earthquake. She is now at the heart of helping those who have suffered horrendous loss and pain.
All seventy pupils recently took possession of line sheets and vigorously sold to family and friends determined to raise as much money as possible.
Michael thanked the children for their efforts on behalf of Gena, who he said has been overwhelmed by the support from home.
Principal James McHugh admitted that the children were upset by the pictures and coverage of the disaster. But that they soon channelled that sadness into a positive response.
“They were only asking for €2 a line but people were very generous towards them,” said James.
“We talked about the disaster at school and we were really delighted with the way the children responded. We also had a readathon and that was also a big success.
“Having the photographer here today now is also very exciting for them and I’m sure they’re really looking forward to seeing their picture in the paper next week- they deserve it”
