Ardaghey becoming a dump tip

Rubbish ranging from household to electrical appliances and even cars are being dumped around the highways and byways of Donegal like confetti at an old style wedding, an Ardaghey man said this week.
He was commenting after the Donegal Post last week brought to the public’s attention littering that is popping up with increasing frequency around the south west. The problem is particularly obvious on the Ardaghey Road between the turn off at the Ardaghey junction and Ardara.
Paul Lynch said that rubbish bags that had been highlighted in our last edition, were this week, strewn around a fifth of an acre of waste ground on the side of the road.
“It’s all domestic rubbish and is a total disgrace. I have heard excuses that people cannot afford to dump because of the recession, but this is nonsense. We all have a responsibility and there is no need for it.”
He said that his mother lived nearby and it was not something that any pensioner should have to put up with.
Certain people were treating the area as a free dump for everything, he claimed.
And the Donegal Post were then brought to areas where everything from burned out cars to old electrical items such as fridges and even cars were being dumped.
Mr Lynch added: “It’s not uncommon for people to come up here with cars, torch them and then abandon them.”
Industrial action prevented contact with Donegal County Council yesterday, but Mr Lynch said that they were contacted last Friday. He said that they would be investigating the dumping come Monday. Meanwhile unofficial and illegal dumps are popping up with alarming frequency in the south west.
