Ardara native Gerard Slowey is busy pounding the local country roads in preparation for his massive charity walk in aid of Action Breast Cancer.
July 26 will mark the first anniversary of the tragic passing of Gerard’s wife Margaret, who lost her brave battle against the illness.
In her memory, and to raise awareness and much needed funds, Gerard has decided to undertake a triple test of physical endurance that’s he’s determined to see through to the end.
“The first walk will travel along the Royal Canal, from Spencer Dock in Dublin, to Clondara on the Shannon,” explains Gerard.
“It’s a 94 mile trek and I’ll be getting underway on Monday, August 2. It’s as close to Margaret’s anniversary as we could make it. In total, I’m hoping to do three walks so I’d love to get the first one off to a good start.
“It’s a solo walk, and I’m really just trying to raise as much money as possible. I’m funding it out of my own pocket. So any money donated will go directly to the cause. Any expenses incurred on my travels – I’ll be looking after.”
Action Breast Cancer are currently in the midst of a huge awareness and research campaign. However, given the current economic climate, funding has been hit hard. Gerard insists that events like his have become crucial in maintaining and preserving the “great work” that’s being carried out by the programme.
He added: “There’s a huge push on now with Action Breast Cancer. They are trying to promote and push the research. Doctors are working on research all the time in the major centres. But it’s very expensive, and most of the doctors actually fund their own labour, but the tests and facilities are very costly.”
In preparation, Gerard has been busy clocking up to eight miles per day. “We’ve already had a barbeque in the Corner House Bar last month which was a huge success. We raised in excess of €2000 in one night, which is fantastic. The town of Ardara is great at throwing its weight behind these kinds of things and they are a credit to the area.
“I’m trying to get out and about as much as possible as I’m determined to see this right ‘till the very end. Of course it will be difficult but that’s the whole idea and part of the fun – that’s why people are so supportive!”
A second barbeque will take place on July 11, World Cup Final day. Gerard would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the local businesses and contributors who have helped out so far, especially the people of the parish and surrounding area who have been so generous to date with his fundraising.
