Bundoran is expected to be well represented in Monaghan this weekend to mark the Episcopal Ordination of local man, Monsignor Liam Seán MacDaid as the new Bishop of Clogher.
The 65-year-old was announced as the new Diocesan Bishop by Pope Benedict in May, following the resignation of the Most Reverend Joseph Duffy who had reached the canonical age limit of 75.
The Bishop-elect was born in the seaside town of Bundoran in July 1945 and was educated in the town and Monaghan.
He has many associations with the diocese where he will now serve as Bishop following his ordination on Sunday in St. Macartan’s Cathedral, Monaghan.
After leaving secondary school, he entered St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, as a seminarian for the Diocese of Clogher and was ordained in June 1969 at the age of 24.
Following his ordination, he received a Diploma in Higher Education with honours from NUI, Maynooth and began teaching at St. Macartan’s College in Monaghan.
Monsignor MacDaid has always had a keen interest in Gaelic games from his teenage years and was a former player with St Joseph’s GAA
club in his native parish and also played on some Donegal Co. teams in the early 1970s.
He was later chairman of the Council of Priests of Clogher Diocese from 1988 until 1996. He was then appointed as Diocesan Secretary and Chancellor of the Diocese, with additional pastoral responsibility for the parish of Tyholland, Co Monaghan. On February 27 2002, he was appointed chaplain by Pope John Paul II.
Speaking ahead of his ordination this week, the Bishop-Elect said his new role will bring “a mix of responsibilities”:
“From next Sunday onwards, I will be facing a new challenge as Bishop of the Diocese of Clogher. My overall responsibility is to pass on the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the people of the diocese.”
